Large Scabious Mining Bee

A large and striking mining bee with a partly red abdomen and a specialized feeder on scabious and devil's-bit (Dipsacaceae). Females have dense brownish thoracic hair, a black head, and red-marked abdominal segments. It nests solitarily in flat, sparsely vegetated ground, often hiding the entrance beneath a plant rosette. Swiss Red List: Near Threatened (NT).
