Anthidium florentinum
Large Wool Carder Bee
A large, strikingly coloured wool carder bee with bold yellow bands on a black abdomen and dense brownish hair on the thorax. Males are larger than females and have three sharp spines at the tip of the abdomen used in fierce territorial battles over flower patches. It nests in pre-existing cavities, lining brood cells with plant fibres scraped from hairy leaves. In Switzerland it occurs in warm, dry lowland habitats including the Valais, Ticino, and Geneva. Swiss Red List: Least Concern (LC).
