Chelostoma campanularum
Harebell Carpenter Bee
A very slender, entirely black bee (5-7 mm) with a narrow cylindrical abdomen adapted for nesting in small beetle burrows in dead wood. It is oligolectic on Campanula (bellflower) pollen. Males sleep inside bellflower blossoms, gripping the petals with their modified terminal segments. It is univoltine, flying from June to August. In Switzerland it occurs in gardens, meadows, and forest edges with abundant Campanula flowers. Swiss Red List: Least Concern (LC).
