Chelostoma rapunculi

Rampion Scissor Bee

A medium-sized, entirely black bee (8-10 mm) with a narrow cylindrical abdomen. Females collect pollen exclusively from Campanula (bellflower) species (oligolectic) and carry it on the scopa on the underside of the abdomen. They nest in pre-existing cavities in dead wood, using mud mixed with small pebbles for cell partitions and nest plugs. The typus locality is Nyon, Switzerland. It is widespread across Switzerland from lowlands to over 2600 m in the Alps, making it one of the highest-nesting bee species in Europe. Swiss Red List: Least Concern (LC).
