Eucera longicornis
Common Long-horned Bee
A medium-sized solitary bee (12-15 mm) named for the extremely long antennae of males, which can reach body length. Males also have a distinctive yellow face mask. Females have brown thoracic hairs and a white scopa on the hind legs. It is oligolectic on Fabaceae (legumes), visiting vetches, clovers, and meadow vetchling. It nests in self-dug burrows in sandy or loamy soils in warm, dry meadows and ruderal areas. In Switzerland it is widespread below 1000 m and classified as Least Concern. Males are important pollinators of Ophrys orchids through pseudocopulation.
