Lasioglossum laticeps

Broad-headed Furrow Bee

A very small sweat bee (6–7 mm) with a black non-metallic body and a characteristically broad, short face in females. It is a generalist (polylectic) forager visiting flowers from at least 7 plant families including Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, and Rosaceae. It is primitively eusocial, forming small annual colonies. It nests in self-excavated burrows in loamy soil, cracks in dry stone walls, mortar joints, and between paving stones, often forming large colonies. It is common and widespread in Switzerland from lowlands to montane elevations, found in vineyards, forest edges, meadows, ruderal areas, and settlements. Its brood parasite is the blood bee Sphecodes ephippius. Swiss Red List: Least Concern (LC).
