Hylaeus cornutus
Horned Yellow-face Bee
A small, slender, entirely black bee (7–8 mm) with a conspicuously expanded and flattened antennal scape in males (the 'horn' that gives the species its name). Both sexes have white facial markings. It carries pollen internally in the crop. It nests in pre-existing cavities in dead wood, hollow stems, and beetle burrows. It is a generalist forager visiting a wide range of flowers. In Switzerland it occurs in warm lowlands and valleys, particularly in the Valais and Ticino. Swiss Red List: Least Concern (LC).
