Hylaeus signatus
Large Yellow-face Bee
A relatively large Hylaeus species (7–9 mm) with a black body and extensive white facial markings that extend broadly up the frons in males. It is closely associated with Asteraceae flowers, especially Centaurea and Cirsium species, from which it collects both pollen and nectar. It nests in hollow stems and beetle burrows in dead wood and is widespread in Switzerland in dry meadows, ruderal areas, and field margins. Swiss Red List: Least Concern (LC).
